The Coorong is a shallow lagoon within the Coorong NP on the Fleurieu Peninsula 113 km s-e of Adelaide.
Ecologically considered one of Australia’s most important wetlands and habitat for over 230 bird species, the area was originally inhabited by the Ngarrindjeri Aborigines whose name for the area ‘kurangh’ means long neck of water. An apt description for the 163 km long area of water running beside a long sandy peninsula. The area is still occupied by this tribe and ancient middens and burial grounds can be seen in various locations. The Ngarrindjeri run cultural and bush tucker tours via Camp Coorong and held their first corroboree in a century in 1999. Walking is the ideal way to see the park with the Nukan Kungun Hike (27 km) the most comprehensive. Boats, canoes & 4WDs can also be used.
Visitor Information Centre: 76 Princes Hwy, Meningie. Tel (08) 8575 1259.
